About Mar-Bo Kennels |
|
We have been in love with the Chinese Shar-Pei since first being introduced to them in 1978. After seeing the movie entitled "The Littlest Hobo," we acquired Down Homes Happy Ambassador "Amber." Shortly after Shir-Du Mr Maku came to live with us and Mar-Bo Kennel came to be.
Although most of the Shar-Pei imported to the US came from Hong Kong, their origin can be traced back to the Han Dynasty in China. Shar-Pei were found mostly in the southern part of China on farms where they were used to guard against predators. They also served as a hunter, worker and guardian as well as a companion. When Mao became Emperor of China, the ownership of dogs was highly taxed and the breed was virtually set free with a few being smuggled into Hong Kong. The Shar-Pei made it's way to the USA in the early 1960's, however, the immense popularity of the breed did not take place until the late 1970's.

When the Shar-Pei first came to the US, we knew temperament would be the fulcrum of success or failure of the breed as an acceptable dog. Shar-Pei need socialization no matter how good its basic temperament seems to be. They should be exposed to a variety of surroundings to be adaptable. Puppies never exposed to the world may be shy and fearful in unfamiliar surroundings, as you'd expect in any protective breed. Take your Shar-Pei to puppy training and obedience classes for socialization and confidence and to learn the basic commands. Shar-Pei are not for everyone, but those who have fallen in love with the breed's personality are as loyal to the breed as the dog is to their family.
